Why is ‘NHS Reform’ trending and what does it mean for you as patient?

Posted on:

The NHS has been at the heart of UK healthcare for over 75 years, and any changes to its structure can significantly impact both patients and staff. Recently, the government has announced NHS England will be abolished to “cut bureaucracy” and reform how the National Health Service is run and to improve efficiency (Ref: Under reforms to put patients first – GOV.UK). But what does this really mean for you as a patient at The Grange Medical Practice?

Quote / Testimonial:
The changes will not impact anyone’s access to the NHS – it will still be free at the point of use and cover all the services it does already.

Announced Key Changes:

1. Dissolution of NHS England:

NHS England will be brought back into the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) to put an end to the duplication resulting from 2 organisations doing the same job in a system currently holding staff back from delivering for patients. This move is designed to reduce administrative costs and direct more funding into frontline care.

2. Streamlining Healthcare Services

The focus will be on reducing layers of management and ensuring that resources are used more effectively. This could mean faster decision-making and a more patient-focused approach to healthcare delivery.

3. Investment in Diagnostic and Treatment Services

There will be an emphasis on making better use of existing NHS resources, such as MRI and CT scanners, to reduce waiting times for critical tests and procedures.

4. A Step Forward for Patient Safety

This new initiative allows patients and families to request an urgent review by a senior doctor if they feel concerns about their condition are not being taken seriously.

What this means for you as a patient at The Grange

  • Potentially Shorter Waiting Times: At The Grange, we are continually striving to enhance our services and ensure that patient care remains our top priority. We are committed to keeping call waiting times as low as possible, often under 3 minutes, and we are always looking for ways to improve further. The introduction of enhanced digital tools such as PATCHS and SystmOne can facilitate quicker responses from healthcare professionals, and also helping to reduce waiting times for consultations along with scans, tests, and specialist services.
  • Changes in How the NHS is Managed: While leadership structures within the NHS England may evolve, the primary objective remains the same i.e to make healthcare services more efficient, responsive, and patient-focused for all.

Our Commitment to You

At The Grange Medical Practice, we are closely monitoring these changes and will keep you informed about how they may affect your care. Our priority remains providing you with the best possible treatment in a timely manner. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us.
